Cybersecurity Career Path: From Help Desk to Security Analyst

Many people think you need years of experience to start in cybersecurity. In reality, most security professionals started in general IT roles and moved into security step by step. Here is a practical path you can follow.

Step 1: Build your IT foundation

Common entry points are help desk technician, tech support specialist and network or systems administrator. These jobs teach you how real systems, users and networks work. Useful certifications at this stage: CompTIA A+ and Network+.

Step 2: Learn security basics

Earn CompTIA Security+ to prove you understand threats, controls and secure architecture. Start taking on security tasks in your current job: patching, access reviews and checking logs.

Step 3: Become a security analyst

A security analyst monitors systems, investigates alerts and responds to incidents. CompTIA CySA+ focuses on exactly these skills. Similar job titles include cybersecurity specialist, cybersecurity engineer and IT auditor.

Step 4: Specialize

  • Offensive security: penetration tester (PenTest+, EC-Council certifications).
  • Digital forensics: investigating incidents and evidence (CHFI).
  • Architecture: designing secure systems (SC-100, SecurityX).

Skills employers look for

  • Networking basics: TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls
  • Linux and Windows administration
  • Reading logs and using a SIEM
  • Clear communication and report writing

The chart at the top of this article shows common entry points and the roles this career can lead to, such as IT manager and IT project manager.
